Maria Muruaga  // Honours Student 2024

My interest in human connections fuels my curiosity about different cultures and how contemporary society impacts our position within an environment. Focusing on portraiture and the narrative behind an image, my project, investigates the relationship between the people and their identity, through their culture and location.

I like to practice exploring sociocultural issues, observing a community, and reflecting upon their identity. Obtaining an insight into other cultures has allowed me to combine my three passions of travel, photography, and pottery while reflecting on experiences away from photographic practice.  I am fascinated by how we are all similar despite apparent differences in our desires and goals as we want to be in a community that allows us to feel included.

Now basing myself in Aberdeen my goal is to produce an honest interpretation of an idea and emotion through visual communicative storytelling. I am using digital photography and focusing on slowing down the process of taking an image, allowing me to create a relationship with my subjects, enabling every picture in the sequence to carry its own story, as I prefer to capture an aspect of truth about human life and surroundings.
